Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.
The Hunter Biden saga is like a modern soap opera. You can't help but wonder what wacky thing Hunter or his legal team may be up to today. For example I found the revelation that John Kerry's top fundraiser was Devon Archer hilarious… Mike Sando has his latest edition of NFL QB Tiers up (subscription required) and its no surprise Patrick Mahomes is ranked first. Might be my rose-colored glasses but I think Mac Jones is underrated (Tier 3)... One underappreciated effect of the US Civil War was how it devastated the whaling industry in America. The North put whaling ships into action for the Navy while the Confederacy made whaling ships priority targets. Meanwhile average citizens switched from whale oil to the cheaper (and plentiful) kerosine and petroleum. Fashion moving away from corsets (whale bones) was the final nail in the coffin... Used to be said of Roman emperors that you'd believe there was a plot against them when they’d be found dead. Now it could be - I'll believe that person has dirt on a high ranking Democrat when they're found dead... Elon Musk should trademark the name LatinX for a Spanish language Twitter, I mean X. That way any politician or news organization that tries to use the term "LatinX" has to pay a royalty... Been said by others but Kamala Harris truly has been the most effective insurance policy in history... Political Arithmetic would be a good name for a blog or Substack account about politics... Will be interesting to see the tax flight from Blue States in 10-years as the House of Representatives is reorganized and Red States get even more members of Congress... Agree with the sentiment that any college subject with the word "science" in the name (i.e. political science) isn't really a science. I'd likewise suggest that perhaps we should automatically be against any word or movement that has "de" as a prefix (i.e. defund the police)... Democrats hate X so much - they all seem to be taking out paid advertisements on the platform. Don't take it badly - I'd mute Republican paid ads too... The first commercial nuclear power plant built from scratch has entered into service in Georgia. As the popular phrase goes - faster please... Who knew? Roman emperors were not pictured with beards until 117 CE. One simple way to help gauge the date of something from the ancient world... Nothing makes me skip over an article faster than having the words "Death of" in the title. Say "the Death of Twitter" or "the Death of Summer" for examples. Don't think I'm missing anything that would add value. You should try to make it a habit too... Speaking of Twitter, I mean X, two things to keep in mind: Elon Musk could have just walked away from the deal for a simple $1 billion fee and the $44 billion he ended up paying represented more revenue for Twitter than they made in their entire existence up to that point. Don't mind him not wanting to be reminded of the old name and regime and making changes at all...
