Re-reading Charles Dickens' Great Expectations for the first time since high school. While reading it I couldn't help but wonder if Horacio Alger based all his "rags to riches" characters on Pip. Highly probable as Dickens wrote Great Expectation in 1861 while Alger's first formulaic book Ragged Dick didn't come out until 1868...
