Think the Republican Party is much better off after the 15th vote for Speaker than it was after the 1st vote because all of the concessions Kevin McCarthy had to make to the 20 holdout Congressmen. If McCarthy was truly a conservative people wouldn't need to twist his arms for him to do the right thing like defunding 87,000 new IRS agents... When Henry Ford raised his workers wages to $5 a day in 1914 his Model T cost $440 so it only took a worker 88 days to pay for one. Ford's best selling vehicle today is the F-150 which costs around $34,500 which means the average Ford worker would have to be paid $49 an hour today to have the same buying power as his 1914 counterpart... If I wasn't wed to calling this column Flotsam and Jetsam - A Mixture of Virtues and Vices would make a good second choice... Will the Neil Young song The Needle and the Damage Done start making a comeback as an ironic reference to the adverse side effects of the mRNA shots? Doubly ironic since Neil Young wanted to pull his music from Spotify because he felt Joe Rogan was spreading Covid misinformation. Meanwhile everything Rogan was saying turned out to be true... Heh Heh... When it comes to smuggling in this country you'd have to start the history with tea as the colonies used to smuggle Dutch tea to avoid paying British Townsend Act taxes. Then you'd have alcohol during prohibition and later cocaine and pot. It could be argued that tea was the original gateway drug... Has to be said but if New England doesn't upgrade their offensive coordinator, offensive line coach and special teams coach this offseason because Bill Belichick is just stubborn - the Patriots would be justified in firing their legendary, longtime coach. Many Pats fans feel the same way... Sears reportedly will be closing all of its remaining stores. Think a great opportunity was missed 10-15 years ago for Sears to rebrand itself as the great American superstore by only selling made in America products. They would have been able to charge slightly higher prices than places like Walmart by advertising on American quality not Chinese junk. People would have went out of their way to shop at Sears (especially in the Mid West). What could have been... Who knew? Benjamin Franklin's iconic "Join or Die" cartoon was not aimed at extolling unity against the British but instead against the French prior to the French and Indian War. I had always just assumed it was geared toward the Red Coats...
