Liberation Day
Today is the day the Trump Administration is supposed to implement sweeping tariffs against many nations.
Golden Rule: Treat others as you would wish to be treated.
The US and other nations have known Donald Trump plans to implement reciprocal tariffs for a long time. It even was something he ran for President on. Do people think he didn't really mean it? Or have they become so used to treating the US unfairly that anything new seems unfair to them? Either way - April 2nd has been dubbed Liberation Day. These tariffs are supposed to be effective immediately. And these are to go on top of tariffs he's already announced.
Don't get me wrong - I have no problems with countries keeping certain tariffs in place to protect industries they consider part of their national identity - such as the US protecting the manufacture of pick-up trucks or Canada protecting Ottawa dairy farmers. This may lead to some of the new tariffs being lower than true reciprocal rates - but probably new tariffs nonetheless. Also convinced Trump is not concerned with how panicked Wall Street gets as long as the prices for eggs and gas and other family staples keep coming down for the US citizens. That's who he cares about - that's who these tariffs are meant to benefit.
One of the chief arguments against tariffs is that the US consumer in the form of higher prices will be the ones to pay the bill. The answer to this is simply "Buy American." Instead of a BMW buy a Ford or a Tesla. Is it that difficult to grasp? It was not too long ago that commercials were asking Americans to "Look for the union label."
With this in mind - look for a number of small American companies who have been victims of high tariffs to parade through the White House in the next couple weeks. Local media will have to cover these stories if members of their target communities are highlighted. This will, of course, be offset by "experts" who claim these tariffs are harming the US economy as exhibited by lower stock prices. Who do you think the average voter is going to believe - these "experts" or their neighbor who says everyone at his or her company has been hampered by unfair tariffs for years and everyone there knows it.
Will this turn into you are either with the US and our tariffs or you're with China who released Covid into that country protesting the tariffs. China has already been slapped with higher tariffs and if you need a true villain - their deeds show they are more than willing to play the part.
The national debt is estimated to be $2 trillion a year and with a three-legged stool of DOGE eliminating government waste and fraud in spending, the Trump Administration increasing both investment and revenue in the US, along with a great new source of funds in the form of tariffs on other nations - there's a good chance Donald Trump can work to reduce the burden felt by the average American taxpayer. If he's able to insure government payments (social security and military paychecks) remain the same and the federal budget is balanced - there's a good chance these changes (including the tariffs) become truly permanent.
The Liberation Day tariffs are scheduled to be announced today, April 2nd at 4:00 PM.
One has to hope that Trey Parker and Matt Stone are out there somewhere working on a tariffs based Team America II - The Reckoning. If not this would be a great project for some AI video.
Good column. However, since both parties in Congress have a vested interest in keeping the system in place I don’t expect to see any meaningful legislation passed. Notice how while Republicans control both houses of Congress and the Presidency, no legislation is being passed. The American public expects the Doge systems to be codified under law to manage the leviathan. The Republican’s response….Bueller, Bueller?
