A Modest Proposal to Get the US Out of the UN
And unlike Swift's Modest Proposal this one has a realistic chance of succeeding.
The UN is a cesspool of corruption. Any hopes of the organization living up to the ideals upon it was founded have long been ground to dust.
The UN is powerless to do anything about Russia's invasion of Ukraine because Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council. Same's true of holding China accountable for their treatment of millions of Uyghurs. The WHO (World Health Organization not the band) has proven to be a wholly owned subsidiary of China whose guidance was counterproductive in the pandemic and whose leader will not even allow the word Taiwan to pass his lips. UN "Peacekeeper" forces have a worse record of sexual abuse than Jeffrey Epstein. The list could go on and on.
And the whole charade is, in large part, run on US tax dollars. We need to get out.
The problem is the United States is so politically divided at the moment that such a course of action would be near impossible. If a Democrat raised such a motion they would get flack both from the extremes of their own Party and also from Republican opponents. If a Republican raised such a motion the same would hold true. Good thing I'm here to offer a solution.
If there's one thing Americans can agree on it's that slavery is bad. Slavery was a shameful part of our nation's past. Every reasonable American today agrees that slavery is bad. Use that cohesive belief to get the US out of the UN.
Simply say that the US does not support slavery and will not be part of the UN if member nations that allow the treatment of humans as property are not expelled. Give the UN two-years to expel the offending countries during which time no funds will be given to the UN from the US. If the UN fails to expel these modern slave states then the US is out of the UN. And the UN would then have another 2-years to get the hell out of NYC and find another country where they can ignore local parking laws.
Problem solved!
According to some reports, there are 167 countries today that still have some form of modern slavery. These reports estimate that 46 million people worldwide are trapped in a system that treats them as property and not as individual human beings. To put this in perspective - there were 4 million slaves in the US prior to Civil War. There's more than 10-times that number today worldwide!
Now the forms of "modern slavery" includes slavery by "ownership" ("chattel" slavery) but also forced government conscription, forced prison labor, forced migrant labor, debt bondage, and sexual slavery. No matter how it's defined - I think all Americans would agree these things are bad and should be considered criminal - not accepted norms.
Reportedly the Top 10 nations with the highest prevalence of modern slavery are - India, China, North Korea, Nigeria, Iran, Indonesia, Congo, Russia, Philippines, and Afghanistan. Outside of India, the Philippines, and maybe Indonesia - is this a list of countries the US wants to be associated with?
Give the UN two years to expel these 10 nations or lose the US as a member nation. What politician in the US would want to come out in favor of slavery? The US would be out of the UN in two years since there's no way China or Russia are given the boot.
Problem solved!
